Fall 2009 Funded Grants

Creston Middle School:
Susie Highley's request for "Kids Will Flip for These" was funded for $498 to purchase three video cameras and tripod for use by students throughout the school is a wide variety of projects.

Matt Apple and Susie Highley's application for "Boys to Men—with Help from Tony Dungy" has $496 for the Boys to Men after-school program. Mentoring by outstanding 7th and 8th grade boys for “at risk” 6th grade students will cover many topics. This will be tied to books such as “Uncommon” to stimulate reading and conversation.

Eastridge Elementary:
Renee Ritchie received $367 for "Make and Take Math" for six first grade math nights to help parents prepare math games to use at home with their children. Two sessions will be held in the clubhouse of apartment buildings that feed into their school.

"First Grade Make and Take Phonics Night" was funded for $483 for Stephanie Sherron to hold phonics nights in local restaurants and apartment clubhouses. It will support the opportunity for parents to develop phonics skills to help their children become strong readers and writers.

Grassy Creek Elementary:
The Fifth Grade Team requested "Small Group Materials" for manipulative gadgets, gizmos, and interactive materials to help students develop math and reading levels. It was funded for $345.

"Focus on Achievement" received $361 for Barbie Langan’s needs for standard-based materials to focus on third and fourth grade students’ skills in language arts and reading levels.

Hawthorne Elementary:
"Science Giants: Scientist Trading Cards" received $500 for Marie Schwartz's students to research contributions of a scientist and create a biography trading card focused on that scientist. Visitors will complete a scavenger hunt using clues to identify each of the scientists.

Heather Hills Elementary:
"Math Intervention Kits" will have $494 for Janet Grant to provide a school-wide math intervention program with resource materials for students who need help with math.

Matt Radcliffe had the "Disc Golf Course Project – disc golf disc sets" grant funded for $483. A disc golf course will be designed and constructed on the back campus of the school grounds. Disc golf will be incorporated in PE curriculum for K-5 students and emphasize math standards.

Lakeside Elementary:
"Literacy Stations" received $460 for Debra Uhl to purchase phonemic awareness activities to help her students improve their reading skills.

Pleasant Run Elementary:
"Healthy Kids Make Better Learners" was funded for $489 for Margaret Catt to address health, physical education and science to help her students understand that physical activity
improves body and mind.

"Achieving State Standards with Guitars" received $500 for Dawn Hritz to purchase guitars to help students identify note names and perform instrumental pieces.

Raymond Park Middle School:
Lucas Gobel received $500 for "Exploring the World of Science: Science Olympiad" to encourage students to explore many different areas of science. The competitive Olympiad is an opportunity for students to excel in various areas of science and technology as well as share it with their fellow students.

Rae Bosio will use $345 to fund "Mosaics" for students to create their own small mosaic picture. It will be either original art work or a copy of an Incan design.

Sunny Heights:
Carrie Wesolowski received $500 for the "Super Readers!" project. The microphones will be used with an existing computer program to increase literacy skills for students who struggle with reading.

Stonybrook Middle School:
A $500 grant will enable Craig Harvey to implement "Robotics" into the curriculum and start a FIRST Lego Robotics after school-activity. The program will affect 6th, 7th and 8th grade students as well as mentors from grades 9 to 12.

"Wind Farming" was funded for $500 to help Craig Harvey's students to design, build, and test airfoils on a wind turbine. They will collect data about electrical output and learn about alternative energy.

Warren Early Childhood Center:
Kelli Servizzi received $500 for her "Picture Yourself a Writer" project. The two-part workshop engages children and families in literacy activities stressing the importance of writing with children. Literacy bags will provide photos and materials to make a book of the activities.
