Brookview:
"Composition Workshop!" received $500 to help defray costs for grade-level workshops from Young Audiences to enhance students' physical body as well as their minds through visual art, music and movement. All students from grades 1 – 5 will participate in this grant for Angie Wilson which will culminate in a family event, "Night With the Arts" on
May 14th.
Eastridge:
Alice Carson has $431 for her "Boys Rocket Reading Club" designed to excite and motivate fourth and fifth grade boys in recreational reading.
"Partnering for Progress" received $364 to partner three boys with an adult male volunteer to hold conversations on topics from the book "Talks I Never Had With my Dad." Scott Ferrell has designed the project to provide positive male role models for the students.
Sabrina Herzog's project was funded for $468 for "Reader's Theatre Presents" to help student's read fluency through practicing and presenting interpretations of classic children's stories.
Hawthorne:
"The Math Maniac Show with Max Millions" received $500 for Yolanda Smith to motivate students to master basic math skills. The presentation will be in conjunction with a family math night activity. A study guide is provided for each teacher to take the assembly experience back into the classroom.
Heather Hills:
A $493 request was funded for Julia Aldrich for "Target Time Math Manipulatives" to provide hands-on opportunities for second grade students to work in small groups on mathematical concepts.
Kathryn Broadlick received $500 to fund school-wide "Literacy Focus Clubs" that will enhance performance, understanding and mastery of literacy skills for struggling students in small group settings.
"Building Comprehension Library Initiative" received $462 for a variety of student-centered literature sources to engage the students in the deep thinking strategies of successful readers. Brenna Michels will organize the comprehension skill tubs to be available for use by the entire student population.
Liberty Park:
A $500 grant for "Survival Skills for the Soaring Eagle" was funded for Liberty Park Teachers. Grades K-5 will learn classroom survival skills, learn to work with others and practice everyday etiquette through one to five minute videos shown during morning announcements. Students in the technology club will help with the taping of positive social behaviors.
Lowell:
Julie Perun will have $500 for "Kindergarten Readiness" for preparing incoming kindergartners with basic tools such as crayons, writing tablets, a pencil and a name tag with the child's name for the families to use at home. During an evening meeting in May all Kindergarten Round-Up families will be invited to a brief meeting to talk about student expectations such as printing their own name, how to lineup quietly, raise their hands before speaking, etc.
Moorhead:
"Tile Task Cards for Math Stations" was funded for $500 for Elaine Fogleman, Kristy Rutter and Sherry Ohl to help their 4th grade students with independent math work after they complete their independent practice.
Stonybrook:
Jerry Cox and the 6B team received $498 to purchase "Individual White Boards" for students to use at their desks.
Walker Career Center:
"Building Workplace Skills" was funded for $420 for Elizabeth Hicks to provide dressforms for teaching alterations in the Advanced Fashion and Textiles classes and the Fashion and Textiles Careers and Occupations class.
Warren Central High School:
For $500 Tyson Fritts will purchase literature through the grant for "Japanese Reading Supplements". He will also purchase Japanese-English electronic dictionaries to help his students further their knowledge of Japanese language and culture.
Warren Early Childhood Center:
Erin Day received $488 for a grant for "Growth Through Gardening" to provide materials to build raised garden boxes. The gardening project will be integrated with counting, measuring, journaling and observing plants grow.
